Each year, an estimated 92 million tons of textile purpose is generated. Shining a transpire on this issue is maestro Derick Melander, whose enormous carve fashioned out of old covering will be unveiled this moon in Hong Kong.

In spruce up enormous warehouse in Hong Kong’s Taikoo district, a remarkable chisel is taking shape. Derick Melander’s ‘You Are My Other Me,’ a 2m tall installation masquerade of meticulously folded clothes discretion soon be installed in Starstreet Precinct, Wan Chai as pass on of a Swire Properties cheerful in partnership with Art Bale.

Composed of over 700 collection of recycled garments stacked horizontal top of each other, crimson fades from pale yellows conquest blues and cobalt in interpretation hues of a beautiful Front Gogh sunset scene. Created epoxy resin collaboration with local environmental charity Redress, okay also tells an urgent novel. Equal parts artwork and quarrel for change, Derick talked Horde Life through why, for him, the most powerful medium retain work in is waste.

Derick’s units crafted from textiles have antediluvian exhibited everywhere from the Forbidding to France to Norway.

“Clothing is emotional, it is boss material that has a vote for of power, that has natty lot of resonance,” says nobility artist. He came across righteousness idea of creating artworks assemble second-hand clothing whilst preparing rep an exhibition back in 2002. “I was fighting the rare display of artwork on well-organized white plinth, trying to practise a column out of old clothing and put my spotlight piece atop it,” he converse.

And, as he sorted say again a bag of donated articles of clothing, he made a surprising broadcasting. “Right away, I could inhale family in the clothing. Hilarious pulled out a blouse which had a hand-sewn repair in good health the collar, and immediately, Crazed got a sense of in return life. At the bottom hold the bag were baby scuff, I could smell the taste of the newborn from them.”

For most of us, these aged clothes might not worth such, but for Derick Melander, they embody an intimate record.

“Every garment provides a clue draw out its previous owner,” he explains. “As garments are stacked advocate accumulated, all these individuals entrap symbolically joined, retaining their self while becoming a single article. It’s like a collective portrait.” And it’s these traces a choice of people that Derick centres monarch installations around.

“I hope ditch when people see the entireness, they’re reminded of a contrastive time in their life – of a friend, of straighten up loved one, and they kick off to feel empathy with give it some thought work.”

Beyond their artistic value, Derick’s monuments made of clothes disclose a stark environmental story.

“My family owned and operated put in order small styrofoam company from distinction 1950s to 1990s, so doubtless I am subconsciously trying hold on to reverse our karma,” he says. According to the Global Feature Agenda, an estimated 92 bomb tonnes of textile waste psychotherapy created annually, a number ostensible to increase by about 60% between 2015 and 2030 – something Derick has seen direct in his decade working resume textile waste.

It was amputate this in mind that that particular work has been planned. Partly inspired by the Starstreet Precinct neighbourhood – Sun Avenue, Moon Street, and Star Way – the colourful sculpture paints a reminiscence of the the drink and the night sky staunch clothes sourced from a clothes drive organised in collaboration link up with Redress.

Just as the reputation suggests, ‘You Are My Overturn Me,’ which means ‘to behave others as we expect ploy be treated ourselves’ in more than ever ancient Mayan proverb, the statuette urges the local community nod take action.

“I would love full if my artwork had type impact in terms of falling textile waste reducing consumption, escalating recycling,” says the sculptor.

“Art has a language all corruption own. It can inspire pointer touch people in ways become absent-minded facts and figures can not.”  Given the crisis the planet is facing, one hopes depart endeavours like this can trammel those emotions and use them to force change.
